The Parline Data Dictionary provides the metadata – labels, names, definitions, classifications and other attributes – of the approximately 500 fields that make up the Parline dataset.

The Data Dictionary is intended to be a reference for technical experts and researchers who want to access or reuse data from Parline, as well as for any other user who wants to understand the content and structure of Parline. Information about how the data is collected is described in our About the data pages.

The labels and descriptions appear across the site as tooltips. The Data Dictionary provides more detailed information to support those who wish to use our data directly, via data exports or the API.

Data in Parline relates to 5 main entities, representing the structures of Countries, Parliaments, Chambers, Specialized bodies and Elections. The relationships between these entities is described on our API pages.

How to use the Data Dictionary

The fields are organised into Groups which relate to the different characteristics and activities of parliaments. The groups are used across the site, and to arrange the information on our Parliament pages.

Browse the Data Dictionary for fields by Group, or search for a specific field using the dropdown selector.

Select an individual field to display the field properties, including

  • the groups and entity it relates to
  • detailed descriptions of the field
  • the types and classifications of data
  • how it is displayed
  • the historical scope of the data

The metadata is also available via the Parline API.
